Artist Statement
I am drawn to memories because of my constant desire to relive the feeling of home and my brief childhood in Colombia. This childhood is where the guardians of life were present, involved, full of care, and healthy. I am curious about how particular objects, imagery, foods, and environments can trigger nostalgia. My nostalgia drives a need to cherish and enhance memories, in which I create a narrative through reimagination. That depicts my personal folklore of leaving behind fragments of home while navigating immigration.
When approaching image making, I am inspired by children’s storybooks, focused on hand-drawn illustrations using various vivid colors when creating imagery. The organic manipulation of shapes, the forced perspective, and expressive line marks guide me as a mode of drawing, building up the imagery and narrative.
I primarily work with printmaking techniques, such as stone lithography and serigraphy. Lithography allows me to explore separate color layers as an approach to building up imagery by repeatedly drawing on the stone. I concentrate on how the different layers of a print can build an image as a whole and bring certain areas of the imagery to life. I am exploring these processes to enhance the storytelling further through finding the perfect medium between the quality of line and colorways.
Slowly, with each print I create, I will gather the fragments of a home from brief memories to create a utopia. Where a childhood in Colombia is grieved but also celebrated. Through my reimagination, I intend for the viewer to be enveloped with the colors, magical landscapes, fauna, and flora that they are transported into this universe where they can explore and find their own connections with their personal memories, nostalgia, and grief.
